Acquiring a Major in Ecology in UP Mindanao have introduced me about the diversity of the flora and fauna of the Philippines as well as stories on how environment is still under the mercy of development. An example is how forest rangers who were lumad, were harassed or threatened by goons hired by big companies in their greed to deforest the land. As my grandmother being a Mandaya, injustice towards indigenous people really hit a cord in me and it led me to question whether or not I'm going to pursue this knowing what I know. I felt like it was a "loosing battle" and I would just be depressed trying to fight a battle I know I can't win. A couple of decades after, I feel like things are already looking up.
UN had released 17 Sustainable development goals (SDGs) as guide points on how we as human kind can address environment and social crises. A lot of legislation had been passed, compliance for the environment have been already mandated, a new wave of green investors has emerged - the green revolution is slowly unfolding. With all these changes, I've took it upon myself to ride on in the wave of this change and take part of it. Thus I first tried stepping in the industry by taking the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) Standards training. After which, I landed a job as an Associate Sustainability Consultant for GCSS, where I was able to witness different sustainability initiatives of companies from different industries like media, banking, mining, power plants, NGO's etc.. However entering this work, I've always known that consulting for small to medium enterprises is where my real interest lies. This was further reinforced after attending this women entrepreneurship seminar whereby Ma'am Jeannie Javelosa, the president of Echostore gave her speech. It felt so right that I was grinning from ear to ear, up to the point that my face was already hurting. And that was it for me. I took it as a sign. I resigned a few months after to set out and pursue my passions for sustainable art and sustainable enterprise on organic products.
ADVOCACY
Furthermore, as an advocate of Sustainability having her share of experience in that industry (under Sustainability reporting using the guideline of the Global Reporting Initiatives Standards), she hopes to spread the awareness through her art by showing the magical side of nature, using of recycled materials, or using of natural dyes.
She has created a Sustainability report for her artist group Empowerment Through Art (ETA) and will be doing so soon for other NGO's and will gradually branch out to small to medium enterprises. She is a fervent believer that Sustainable art is possible in the Philippines and that art is a powerful medium to spread her advocacy on sustainable businesses or sustainability in general.

Turning point. At Novotel during a conference on women entrepreneurs. With mic on hand is Ma'am Jeannie Javelosa, president of Echostore. |
